Krishna Jayanthi!

Hello frnds!
Here comes Avani month ( Aug to Sep).. The function that falls under this category is GOKULASHTAMI!! And of course, this is popular among most of the people.
Ashtami - Roshini star, Bhagwan KRISHNA's birthday. He is the eight son of Devaki and Vasudev.
Gokulashtami is in praise of Lord Krishna and it rejoices the birth of Lord Krishna. Gokulashtami celebrations are usually held for 8 days. The reason for Krishna's birth and the deeds by him as an avatar are highlighted during this festival through Pravachanam on Narayaneeyam and Bhagavatham. Japam, Homam and Abishekam are performed as also the Laksharchana.Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami tithi.
Mathura is also knows as Brij Bhoomi - The land where Shri Krishna was born and spent his youth. It is an important pilgrim place of the Hindus and one of the seven sacred cities in India. The main pilgrim center in Mathura is the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple. Krishna is the Supreme Person. Lord Krishna appeared over five thousand years ago in Mathura, India to Devaki and Vasudeva in the jail cell of the tyrant Kansa.
Mathura was the capital of the Yadavas, to which Krishna's parents Vasudeva and Devaki belonged. The king Kansa, Devaki's brother, had ascended the throne by imprisoning his father, King Ugrasena. Afraid of a prophecy that predicted his death at the hands of Devaki's eighth son, Kamsa had the couple locked into a prison cell. After Kansa killed the first six children, and Devaki's apparent miscarriage of the seventh, Krishna was born.
Since Vasudeva believed Krishna's life was in danger, Krishna was secretly taken out of the prison cell to be raised by his foster parents, Yasoda and Nanda, in Gokula.
Kamsa threw Vasudeva and Devaki into the prison and planned to invite Krishna to Mathura and kill him there. He, therefore, sent his cousin Akrura to Brindavan to bring Krishna. Akrura was a great devotee of Krishna. He told Krishna of Kamsa's evil intentions. Krishna rejoiced. He said, "Let us all go to Mathura." With him went Akrura, Balarama, Nanda and some other gopalakas.
Krishna pounced on Kamsa, caught hold of his hair and pushed him to the ground. Kamsa tried to get up to save himself. He tried to fight. But Krishna killed him. The people of Mathura sighed in relief. They celebrated Krishna's victory with great joy because Kamsa had been a tyrant. Krishna did not ascend the throne, but crowned Ugrasena, his grandfather.
On Janmashtami, we celebrate Krishna! We decorate our house, but Maakolam by keeping small footprints of Kutti Krishna. We decorate our Pooja room with Mango leaf. We garland Krishna. We prepare Laddu, salt and sweet cheedai!, butter, fruits and milk. We keep all infront of God and chant mantra and songs. We perform Neivedhya and Karpoora Aarthi. We believe Krishna listens to us and keeps us healthy and happy! Even if we are not aware of the mantras, we simply say Krishna, Om Narayana, Smaravaram , Radhe Shyam Radhe Shyam Radhe Shyam , by which we will be blessed with Krishna's Darsanam.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frnds, for the past one yr, I've been sharing the various Hindu festivals with you. Expect more exciting posts soon!!!

Varalakshmi Virdham (Month of Aavani)

This month is called ad Avani in tamil. The grand and God faith funcation happens in this month on the last Friday of Aadi or first week of Aani. This year Varalakshmi Virdham occurs on 20 August 2010 and is also called as Lakshmi Pooja.

Now let me tell a few things about Varalakshmi Virdham. The recipes we offer God on this day is Kolkukattai made with rice flour and poornam which is made of coconut with jaggery. We neatly clean the pooja place and will draw a big kolam, decorate the mandapam. On Friday we will take oil bath and make the idly, kolukattai, two kinds of sweet and one with salt, vada and some fried rice depending on the necessity we can also make many items.

We will take a kalasam and cover it with a cloth which resembles a skirt. Inside the kalasam we will put rice, betal, coins, lemon and put a bunch of mango tree leaf which will be kept at the mouth of the kalasam. Above all we will place a coconut on top of the kalasam and decorate it with chandan and kum kum. In the front of the coconut we will draw Lord Lakshmi’s face and decorate it with flower and garland. You can also decorate it with some gold necklace and chain and put one comb, mirror and bangles in one silver plate and place a banana leaf and fill with the kolukattai, idly and all the recipes in front of the kalasam. Do not forget to decorate the mandapam with garland and flowers and lights as per your wish. Then ask two ladies to take the kalasam and place it in the mandapam.

Arrange for a progidar to chant mantras for pooja and according to his instructions do the necessary pooja. After the pooja tie the holy thread in the right hand and distribute the prasadam which was devoted to the God to the people who attend the pooja. The full moon day following this pooja would be Aavani Avittam which is a function for gents of family. On this day the poonal would be changed. People wake up early in the morning and take bath and wait for the sastrigal to arrive home and recite mantras sitting together with the family members (gents) and change the poonal – the holy thread worn by Brahmin gents. This month is also good to have marriage functions, house warming functions.

In my next blog I will talk about some Hindu traditions about Marriages etc.
